Newcastle United are in the picture to sign Valencia’s César Tárrega, according to El Desmarque.

The centre-back has been a regular since returning to Mestalla from a loan spell at Real Valladolid last summer, and played 38 games last season.

Tárrega was part of the Spain U21 squad that lost to England U21s in the Euros quarterfinals. His performances in the tournament haven’t gone unnoticed and Bologna and Newcastle are mentioned.

The Serie A club have identified the 23-year-old as a target to replace Jhon Lucumí, who could be sold this summer. This is reported in Italy and El Desmarque, after relaying it, provide their take on Newcastle.

They say several Premier League clubs have taken notice of Tárrega and only Newcastle are mentioned. El Desmarque state he’s yet to receive an official offer, but his entourage are aware of the interest.

Tárrega’s contract expires in 2028 and he’s publicly expressed his desire to sign an extension. The report states he’s expected to have a meeting with Valencia CEO Ron Gourlay in July to discuss a renewal.

Eddie Howe’s side have to convince Tárrega to change his mind and battle with Bologna if they want to secure his services. Both are well within the capabilities of the Magpies.
